Medicinal Rice Varieties of C.G.
The IGKV, affiliated to the University Grants Commission, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with BARC to conduct a range of research on various crops.
As part of the agreement, a study is being carried out on three varieties of rice – Gathwan, Maharaji and Laicha – and under the guidance of V P Venugopalan, Deputy Director, Bio Science Group, BARC and other scientists.

Maharaji
As a tonic for woman after delivery. This variety is given to lactating mother.
It is believed that the Laddoo made from roasted rice mixed with sugar, eaten by lactating mother is helpful to produce milk and provide more nutrition to the breast-feeding child.

Karhani
Used for curing paralysis in Chhattisgarh. The variety is also used as tonic, in epilepsy and making soot.
Cooked rice is useful in breathing problems and epilepsy.
It is used in irritation during urine discharge, yellow urine colour and also used as a tonic.
Karhani variety is medicinally famous in both Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.
The tribal people use this variety to make traditional drink, Handia . Handia is given to the patient one glass every morning in an empty stomach. Ingredients including seven medicinal plants, cumulatively called Ranu are mixed with Karhani rice for the preparation of Handia .
It is also used as Kajal (lamp black/soot). Kajal made from burnt grains ash, mixed with pure ghee and applied on eyelashes is said be effective in cataracts.
Gathuan
Found to be useful in the treatment of Gathian disease.
The rice is also helpful in Osteoporosis.
Possesses properties to treat lung & breast cancer.
Grain is useful in treatment of insulin.
Baisoor
For treating the skin ailments, fungal infections such as ringworm, eye-related infection such as conjunctivitis, Baisoor variety is recommended.
In case of headache; hemicrania and epilepsy, inhalation of fumes of rice bran is useful.
It is also used as a face pack with neem leaves.
Sarai Phool
Used for removing weakness in human beings.
Bhejri
Given to lactating mothers. For early removal of placenta, it is given with linseed seeds and gur to cows after delivery
Resari
Rice water is useful as a tonic for cattles.
Puffed rice mixed with bark of Saccharum spontaneum plant is useful in chronic cough
Danwar
Raw rice of Danwar variety of Chhattisgarhis given to the pregnant cow for safe pregnancy, healthy calf and for easily removal of placenta.
The green plants of the variety are also given to the cattle for the same case.
